Reading
I finished my Up-Next Pile from the previous post. All three of the books (Recursion, Wahala, and Take My Hand) were absolutely AMAZING. I read The Silent Wife and it’s a strong 2, if that. The reviews for that book definitely didn’t lie. I feel I only finished it because it was such a short read because I definitely don’t waste my time reading books that I don’t like.
I also ended up reading The Trees by Percival Everett earlier this month and I can’t express enough how much I enjoyed the book. It’s the perfect mix of satire, historical fiction, fantasy, mystery, crime, and thrill. It’s satirical retribution done right. Perfectly even. I couldn’t wait to see how it ended, but now after finishing, I’m disappointed that I didn’t take a break and let some of the story marinate. I don’t know how to explain it. I’d reread it, but I know it’s just going to have me feeling the same way all over again and I don’t want to inflict any more pain on myself. I’m in some sort of limbo. I don’t like it.
Up Next Pile:
- Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Hell of a Book by Jason Mott
- I Am Not Sidney Poittier by Percival Everett
- On Rotation by Shirlene Obuobi
- The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks
I’m not necessarily making it a point to read these in a certain amount of time. Although I plan to start on those I’ll have to return to the library since waiting lists are extremely queued. I’ve long since moved away from setting a monthly reading goal. Kinda takes the fun out of it for me because I’ve made it an obligation.
Watching
I’m still watching Stranger Things. I watched Volume 2 and since I won’t see any new episodes until 2 years from now, I’m hoping rewatching this show over and over will help with the void. The logic makes sense to me and only me and I’m good with that.
Listening
Audiobooks and playlists for the gym. We’re gearing up for back-to-school season and I know I’ll have limited time to sit and hold a book for hours. At least with audiobooks, I can still get some “reading” in while I’m on the go.
As for my gym playlist, I’ve started going back to the gym and working out about 5 days/week. It’s always so hard to start, but I’m glad I did because I absolutely LOVE the time I spend. I do plan to document my fitness journey at some point.

July 25, 2022 at 6:57 pmEver time I see you post about reading I want to run to the library. I miss checking out a book. Ive been purchasing and running out of room on all 4 of my book shelves. I keep telling myself stop purchasing. I get about 3 books in, a year. Pitiful on my behalf. I keep saying I’m going to do better. I need to START the ones i have waiting instead of buying new ones. Girl, getting up and going to the gym is definitely the hard part. when I get there I’m usually good. Im in the zone. I’m not trying to leave.

August 3, 2022 at 9:25 amI’ve bought a few here and there but I’ve slowed down tremendously because I’ve run out of room on my shelves as well.. and this is AFTER a MASSIVE purge. I don’t have room to add another shelf, so maybe I’ll take some books and add them to a shelf in my bedroom to make some room. I’m on The Story Graph app if you ever need any of my reading suggestions: https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/raelasoul
